Frequently Asked Questions

What does worldschooling mean?

Worldschooling is an educational approach that uses travel, real-world experiences, and global exposure as core components of learning. It’s not defined by a specific curriculum or teaching method. Instead, it’s based on the idea that children (and adults) learn deeply and meaningfully by engaging directly with the world around them.

Worldschooling, among its many forms, could look like:

  • Exploring history by walking through ancient cities or museums
  • Studying science through hikes, wildlife encounters, or natural phenomena
  • Learning languages through immersion in new cultures
  • Developing social skills by connecting with people from diverse backgrounds

Some families follow a structured academic plan while traveling. Others take a more flexible, interest-led approach. Most find a balance somewhere in between.

Worldschooling emphasizes adaptability, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. It supports learning in real time — through challenges, discoveries, and shared family experiences. Whether you’re visiting one new country a year or living on the road full time, if your family is intentionally learning through the world, you’re worldschooling.

Can we join a worldschooling cruise as a homeschooling family?

Yes — our cruises are specifically designed with homeschooling and worldschooling families in mind. We refer to them as worldschooling cruises because they support a lifestyle of learning through travel, connection, and cultural immersion, but they are open to anybody who embraces learning through doing.

While we don’t offer formal homeschooling classes onboard, these trips naturally create a rich educational environment. Here’s how:

  • Social learning: Kids form friendships quickly on cruises. With shared spaces, supervised activities, and plenty of freedom to play and explore, they develop confidence, independence, and strong social skills in a safe, self-contained setting.
  • Cultural immersion: Each cruise visits multiple countries and ports. Families wake up in a new destination without the stress of packing, unpacking, or navigating airports — giving kids more energy and attention for exploring new cultures, history, food, and landscapes.
  • Private excursions: We organize optional, family-friendly excursions at many ports, designed to deepen the learning experience and keep kids connected with their new friends on land as well as at sea.

Most families bring their own curriculum, learning materials, or interest-led projects — and it’s common for kids to study or create together while onboard. However, many also find that the cruise itself offers so many enriching opportunities that formal academics often take a back seat.

In short: yes, we offer cruises that support homeschooling families — with the freedom to learn in your own way, surrounded by a like-minded community, while exploring the world together.

What’s the difference between a worldschooling cruise and a homeschool cruise?

A worldschooling cruise includes everything you might find on a traditional homeschool cruise—community, family-friendly experiences, and opportunities for learning—but with a broader, globally immersive approach.

Homeschool cruises often focus on academics, with structured classes or workshops onboard. In contrast, worldschooling cruises prioritize experiential, place-based learning. Families explore multiple countries in one trip, engage with different cultures, and learn organically through travel, connection, and real-world exposure.

There’s no formal curriculum or required programming. Each family follows their own rhythm—some bring schoolwork, others lean into unschooling or project-based learning. What connects everyone is a shared belief that meaningful education happens both inside and outside the classroom.

Many families searching for “homeschool cruises” find that our worldschooling cruises offer deeper learning, more flexibility, and a stronger sense of community—all while traveling to incredible destinations without the stress of typical trip logistics.

How are the group cruises organized?

All of our group cruises are organized by Worldschooling Journeys, a division of Every Avenue Travel. We work with trusted cruise lines and create a framework for community, connection, and learning tailored to homeschooling and worldschooling families.

Our cruises are not guided or led trips. While Elena Ollick (founder of Every Avenue Travel) may join some sailings, she does not attend all of them — and no trip depends on a single leader. Cruises are designed to be self-contained and flexible, with families free to follow their own rhythm while benefiting from a shared experience with like-minded travelers.

That said, our team is actively involved in supporting each trip from start to finish. You’ll have 24/7 access to our experienced support team, who maintain direct contact with the cruise line and local excursion providers throughout your journey.

We provide:

  • A detailed pre-trip guide, including packing tips, ship deck plans, port info, bonding tips, and group dynamics guidance
  • Optional pre-cruise hotel booking and assistance with flight searches — just reach out and we’ll help you find the best options
  • Organized pre-cruise meetups, a welcome meeting onboard, and — when possible — a ship staff introduction (pending cruise line approval)
  • Carefully researched private port excursions tailored specifically to our worldschooling community. These excursions are designed to be culturally enriching, age-appropriate, and aligned with our community values. We invest significant time and effort into ensuring quality, safety, and value, always working with trusted partners to deliver meaningful experiences at fair prices.
How are land trips organized?

Land-based trips are either organized directly by our team or in collaboration with local tour operators who have deep knowledge of the region. These trips are more structured than cruises and always include experienced guides or group leaders who are familiar with the local culture, language, and logistics.

  • The goal of our land trips is to offer culturally immersive, educational experiences while supporting and uplifting local communities. We prioritize working with small, locally-owned businesses, and we carefully design itineraries that are respectful, family-centered, and rooted in meaningful connection — both with the destination and the people who call it home.
Do you offer more cruises than the ones on the homepage?

Yes — the cruises shown on the homepage are just a small selection.

We offer over 40 different worldschooling and family-friendly cruises, each designed to support connection, ease, and real-world learning. The homepage slider simply features a few of our current or upcoming group favorites, but it’s far from the full list.

You can view all current cruise options — including pricing, dates, and itineraries — on our Trips page.

In addition to our hosted group sailings, we can also help you research and book individual family cruises (not part of a group) if you're looking for a more private option. Just reach out — we're happy to guide you toward the best fit for your family's needs and travel style.

Do you book individual cruises and tours for just one family?

Yes, absolutely! We’re happy to help with private travel arrangements for individual families.

Booking through us supports a small, family-run business rather than a large corporation — at no extra cost to you. All of our bookings are priced at the standard market rate (the same you’d find on your own), but with the added benefit of personalized service and expert guidance. We work on a commission basis directly with hotels, cruise lines, and tour operators, so you get full support without paying more.

Whether you're planning a private adventure or your schedule doesn’t align with our current group offerings, we’ll help you find the right fit and take care of the booking process from start to finish.

We currently specialize in:

  • Family-friendly cruises
  • Luxury hotels and resorts
  • Multi-day guided tours in select destinations

Just send us a message with your preferences — including destination, dates, interests, and any special requests — and we’ll curate a list of options tailored to your family’s travel style.

I’m ready to book, what are the next steps?

Each of our cruises and land trips has its own dedicated page with full details, pricing information, and a booking inquiry form. To start the process, simply visit the page for the cruise you’re interested in and submit the form.

Here’s how booking works step-by-step:

  1. Submit your inquiry form on the cruise page — this gives us the information we need to check current availability, pricing, and cabin options.
  2. Once we receive your form, we’ll follow up with updated pricing and cabin options and answer any questions you have.
  3. When you're ready to move forward, we’ll send a secure link to enter your credit card details via encrypted vault, or you can provide them by phone.
  4. We handle the booking directly through the cruise line's back-end system via our travel agency, Fora Travel. This means your pricing will always match the official cruise line website — no added fees, and often with added perks or upgrades through our agency.
  5. Once booked, you’ll receive a confirmation and gain access to group details, private excursions, and all community updates.

You’re welcome to reach out to us at any point via WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or Email — contact links are available at the bottom of each page.

Booking with us means you’re not only joining the cruise — you’re being placed into our worldschooling group, with access to all private excursions, meetups, and support.

Want to hear what it’s like from others who’ve booked with us? Read this post!

Do you charge extra to organize these cruises?

No — there is no additional cost to book a worldschooling cruise through us.

We operate as licensed travel agents and book directly through the cruise lines. That means the price you pay for your cabin is the same as booking directly with the cruise line — but with the added benefit of:

  • Access to our worldschooling group community
  • Coordination of private excursions and onboard meetups
  • Personalized support from our team before and during your trip
  • Extra perks or amenities, available on select cruise lines and cabin categories

We’re compensated directly by the cruise lines via commission, so you get all the added value without paying more.

If you’ve found our support helpful, we also encourage you to book non-group travel (hotels, cruises, tours) through us. Every additional booking helps sustain the work that goes into organizing these worldschooling experiences — from researching destinations and building relationships with local providers to coordinating logistics and supporting families on the ground.

Your support makes this community possible, and we’re grateful for it.

Can I join you on a cruise if I book on my own?

No — to be part of our official worldschooling cruise group, your booking must be made through us.

Families who book independently through the cruise line (or another travel agent) are welcome to sail on the same ship, but they will not be included in the group activities, private excursions, or communication channels we coordinate for our travelers.

Organizing these group experiences takes significant time and behind-the-scenes effort — including researching routes, arranging private excursions, negotiating perks, and building a strong, well-matched community onboard. We do not charge families anything extra to be part of these groups. Instead, we’re compensated directly by the cruise line when you book through us.

Booking through us also gives you access to:

  • Private group excursions tailored to families and designed for deeper learning and connection
  • A WhatsApp group to connect with other families ahead of time, coordinate meetups, and share planning tips
  • Onboard meetups and welcome activities
  • Full support from our team before and during the cruise

If you’re interested in joining a worldschooling group cruise, please contact us directly — we’re happy to help find the best cabin and get you connected.

Will there be group leaders or hosts on the cruise?

No — our cruises do not include designated group leaders or paid hosts.

Cruises are self-contained and fully operated by the cruise line, with onboard staff, entertainment, kids' clubs, and activities already built in. To keep costs low and flexibility high, we don’t add paid leaders, as that would require charging families significantly more.

Instead, our Worldschooling Journeys team organizes all the key group elements remotely — including pre-cruise hotel options, flight tips, onboard meetups, group dinners (when possible), and private port excursions. You'll have ongoing support from our team and access to a group chat with other families.

This structure allows families to connect, explore, and build community at their own pace — without added pressure or cost. If you’re looking for a more structured experience with daily guidance, one of our land-based trips may be a better fit.

Is there an educational component to these trips?

Yes — but not in the traditional classroom sense.

Our trips are built around experiential learning, where education happens through exploration, cultural immersion, and hands-on discovery. Instead of formal lessons or curriculum, families learn by engaging directly with new environments, people, and places.

Examples of real-world learning include:

  • Visiting historic sites, museums, and cultural landmarks
  • Exploring natural environments like fjords, volcanoes, or coral reefs
  • Interacting with local guides and communities
  • Developing social skills and independence through travel

Many families also bring their own academic materials or follow interest-led learning while onboard. The result is an educational experience that’s flexible, meaningful, and often more memorable than anything taught in a classroom.

Is anyone doing math, language arts, or formal schoolwork?

It depends on the family.

Some families bring along light academics such as math workbooks, reading assignments, or writing projects. Others choose to take a complete break from formal schoolwork and focus on experiential learning during the trip.

There is no required curriculum or academic structure on our cruises. However, it’s common for kids to naturally form study groups or collaborative learning spaces onboard — especially when they discover shared interests.

Families are encouraged to follow their own educational rhythm, whether that includes structured learning or simply soaking in the experience as it unfolds.

What group activities will be organized on cruises?

We keep scheduled group activities simple and optional, so families can enjoy both connection and freedom during the cruise.

Every sailing includes:

  • A welcome meet-and-greet on embarkation day
  • A group dinner on the first night to help everyone get acquainted
  • Linked dining reservations so families can all dine together nightly, though some may choose to dine based on their own schedule
  • Access to a group chat for coordinating meetups, excursions, or spontaneous gatherings throughout the trip
  • Optional, but highly recommended: port excursions, specifically tailored to our worldschooled group

Beyond that, the cruise ship itself offers a full schedule of entertainment, kids’ clubs, and activities — which families are free to enjoy together or separately. In our experience, children make friends quickly, and adults naturally form smaller connection groups based on shared interests and energy levels.

We also try to arrange special enrichment opportunities, such as a behind-the-scenes talk with the ship’s engineer or staff, though these are subject to cruise line approval.

Dining is flexible: we link all cabins under the group reservation so it’s easy to sit together or make your own plans.

Each family can engage as much or as little as they choose — our structure creates space for connection without adding pressure or over-scheduling.

I’m not sure I can handle that many days at sea. What should I expect?

It’s a common concern — especially for those new to cruising — but many families discover that sea days are actually some of the most enjoyable parts of the trip.

Unlike port days, which are focused on off-ship exploration and can be physically tiring, sea days offer a slower pace and more opportunities to:

  • Enjoy the ship’s full range of amenities (pools, shows, kids’ clubs, activities)
  • Participate in informal meetups or downtime with other worldschooling families
  • Establish a daily rhythm, rest, and reconnect as a family
  • Let kids bond through play, games, and shared adventures onboard

On sailings with multiple sea days, families often report feeling more connected and settled — with time to build relationships, follow interests, and fully enjoy the cruise experience without rushing.

In fact, some of our most memorable group trips have included extended stretches at sea, and many families are surprised at how much they look forward to them once onboard.

Are there group excursions for the Worldschooling group?

Yes — we organize private group excursions on all of our cruises and in all of the ports, unless the group specifically chooses not to participate (which is very rare).

These excursions are a core part of the Worldschooling Journeys experience. They’re thoughtfully designed to be:

  • Educational and hands-on, with opportunities for real-world learning
  • Family-friendly and age-appropriate, making it easy for kids and adults to enjoy together
  • Culturally immersive, often led by local guides who provide deeper insight into each destination
  • More affordable than cruise line excursions, thanks to negotiated group rates

We have a dedicated team member whose full-time role is planning and coordinating these excursions. That means every outing is researched, vetted, and aligned with our values — enriching, safe, and community-oriented.

Key details:

  • Excursions are optional and priced separately from your cruise fare
  • You’ll pay Every Avenue Travel directly
  • All logistics — including dates, pricing, age guidance, and what to expect — are shared through your cruise’s private WhatsApp group
  • If, for any reason, the group decides not to participate in an excursion at a particular port, we won’t organize one — but this is the exception, not the norm

Our families often say these shared excursions are a highlight of their trip — offering deeper learning, stronger bonds, and unforgettable memories.

How do you choose and price the excursions for each cruise?

We plan excursions with one goal in mind: to offer meaningful, family-friendly experiences that are both educational and affordable.

Each excursion is hand-selected based on:

  • What’s unique or culturally significant in that destination
  • How well it suits kids and mixed-age families
  • Our commitment to partnering with local tour operators, so your money directly supports the local economy

We handle all logistics — researching, vetting, negotiating group rates, and designing the itinerary — so families can simply show up and enjoy the experience.

How pricing works:

Excursion costs are based on the type of activity, regional cost of services, and group size. The more families who join, the more the total cost is shared — which often lowers the per-person price.

Typical price ranges (per person, USD):

  • $50–$90 → shorter cultural or walking tours
  • $90–$120 → half-day, hands-on or adventure-based excursions
  • $120–$190 → full-day or premium experiences unique to the region

Regional pricing also plays a role. For example, a guided tour in Hawaii or Norway may cost significantly more than a similar activity in mainland U.S. or Southeast Asia due to higher local operating costs. We always aim to keep pricing reasonable for the value provided.

Excursion details — including pricing, activity level, age recommendations, and booking info — are shared in the cruise’s WhatsApp group in advance. Participation is optional, so you can choose what fits your family best.

Do you facilitate group communication?

Yes — communication is a key part of every group experience we organize, and we make sure you’re connected before and during the trip.

For cruises, we provide:

  • A WhatsApp group for all families booked into the worldschooling group, active well before departure. This is where we share updates, excursion details, tips, and space to ask questions and get to know each other.
  • A Google doc with optional personal bios and details each family chooses to share — great for finding common interests, ages, and travel styles.
  • A pre-cruise meetup (often at the group hotel or near the port) so families can connect before boarding.
  • An onboard welcome meeting on embarkation day to kick things off in person.
  • Linked dining arrangements, so group families are seated in the same section of the dining room — making it easy to eat together or switch up tables as the group bonds.
  • On most cruise lines, we also use the ship’s messaging app for easy communication while onboard. Our team creates a group using stateroom numbers so families can message each other throughout the sailing.

For land trips, all families are added to a dedicated WhatsApp group ahead of time to discuss the itinerary, ask questions, and build connections before meeting in person.

This structure allows for flexibility — you can engage as much or as little as you like — while making it easy to connect, coordinate, and feel part of a shared experience.

Will I get sea sick?

Most travelers — even those prone to motion sickness — do not experience issues on cruises.

Modern cruise ships are very large and equipped with powerful stabilizers that minimize movement. The crew also monitors weather closely and adjusts course when possible to avoid rough seas.

On typical sailings, including ocean crossings, families might experience one or two mildly rocky days over a two-week period. For most people, it’s manageable and often unnoticeable.

That said, we do recommend packing seasickness medication or patches just in case — especially for sensitive travelers or first-time cruisers. These are rarely needed, but helpful to have on hand for peace of mind.

How do I know if we get along with the other families?

Every group is different — but in our experience, most families find their people pretty quickly.

The key is participation. Families who engage with the group — whether through the WhatsApp chat, meetups, excursions, or just informal conversations — tend to build meaningful connections. Some bond deeply with a few others, while some enjoy the wider group energy. There’s room for both.

We’ve had:

  • Introverts who preferred quiet moments and smaller group dynamics
  • Extroverts who thrived on group outings and social energy
  • Kids of all personalities who formed fast friendships across ages and backgrounds

You don’t need to “fit in” a certain way — just show up as yourself. Be open, respectful, and willing to connect, and you’ll likely find others doing the same.

And remember: the goal of these trips isn’t to force connection — it’s to create space for connection to happen naturally.

Can you tell me more about your mission and vision?

At Worldschooling Journeys, our mission is to create meaningful, connection-based travel experiences for homeschooling and worldschooling families who want more than just a vacation.

We believe that learning happens best through real-world experiences, especially when shared with a like-minded community. Our vision is to build a mobile village — one where families can explore the world together, support one another, and give their children the freedom to grow in environments that are rich with culture, diversity, and natural curiosity.

Whether it’s a multi-country cruise, a seasonal farm stay, RV caravanning, sailing, skiing, or slow travel — we aim to design journeys that reflect the full spectrum of what families want to experience together. We focus on:

  • Ease and flexibility — no packing and unpacking, no rigid structure
  • Deep community — families who travel and learn side by side
  • Real-world education — through place, people, and presence

We’re building more than trips — we’re building a lifestyle of freedom, connection, and learning that families can return to again and again.

Read our full vision: POST

Are there payment plans?

Yes — we offer flexible payment plans for all cruise bookings.

You’re welcome to divide your payments in any way that works for you, as long as the full balance is paid by the final due date, which is typically 90 days before the cruise departs (this may vary slightly by cruise line). Just let us know if you'd like a payment plan, and we’ll schedule it to match your preferences.

If you don’t request a custom plan, we’ll simply charge the initial deposit to lock in your rate and cabin. After that, the remaining balance will be automatically charged by the cruise line on the final due date. We’ll always communicate that due date clearly with you before booking, so there are no surprises.

This setup allows you to book confidently — whether you prefer to pay in full, break it up over time, or set it and forget it.

How does payment work, and how do I know it’s safe?

We take payment security and transparency seriously — and we’re happy to walk you through exactly how it works.

For Cruises:

All cruise bookings are made through Fora Travel, a licensed agency with IATA number 33520476. Our team operates under strict internal protocols, and all employees are bound by NDAs to protect your personal and financial information.

When you're ready to book:

  • We will clearly communicate total cost, deposit amount, and final payment due date before anything is charged.
  • Once you approve, you’ll receive a link to a secure, encrypted credit card vault to safely store your payment details. This system is PCI-compliant and used across the travel industry.
  • We always double-check with you before charging the deposit.
  • On the final due date (usually 90 days before the cruise), the remaining balance is automatically charged to the card on file. There are no reminders sent by us at that point, so we encourage you to note the due date at time of booking.
  • All payments go directly to the cruise line, and you’ll receive official confirmation emails directly from the cruise line, not from us.

For Land Trips:

Land trip payments are processed through WeTravel, a secure third-party booking platform that allows you to pay directly using a credit card or other secure methods. You’ll complete the booking yourself through a private, secure link.

Additional Tips:

  • We strongly recommend using a credit card for all bookings — not only for peace of mind, but also because many credit cards offer built-in travel protection for cancellations or interruptions due to unforeseen events.
  • If you’d prefer a payment plan, we’re happy to set one up — just let us know. (More on that in the next question.)

Your financial security and confidence are important to us — and we're here to make the process as smooth and transparent as possible.

Should I add cruise travel insurance?

We recommend having travel insurance, but whether you need a separate policy depends on your situation.

Start by checking with your credit card company — many cards include trip cancellation, interruption, and medical coverage when you use them to book travel.

If your card doesn’t offer enough protection, a separate policy can be a smart choice, especially for international travel or if you’re traveling with kids.

Our recommended provider: SafetyWing Nomad Insurance

  • U.S. citizens → choose the Essentials Plan
  • Non-U.S. citizens or long-term travelers → choose the Complete Plan

You can buy a one-time policy or set up a subscription for ongoing coverage.

Are cruise meals safe for allergies and special diets (like celiac or vegan)?

Yes. Major cruise lines can accommodate dietary needs, including celiac/gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, and other food allergies — as long as they’re informed in advance.

When you book through us, our team will pass your dietary requirements to the cruise line. Once onboard, your dining staff will be aware and take extra care with your meals. For serious allergies, we always recommend confirming again with the head waiter at your first meal.

Cruise kitchens are not always 100% allergen-free, but with proper notice, meals can be made safely and carefully.

What should we pack for a cruise?

There’s no luggage limit on cruises (aside from airline rules), so you can pack comfortably. Many families bring an extra suitcase just for consumables — like favorite snacks, coffee, or oat milk — and return with that bag empty. Ship coffee and creamers aren’t always ideal, so bringing your own can make a big difference.

Alcohol policies vary by cruise line, but most allow small amounts onboard, and you can often buy more in port. We’ll include specific rules and tips in your cruise prep guide.

You’ll also receive a packing guide tailored to your trip, with suggestions based on your itinerary and season. For colder ports, layers and waterproof items are key. For tropical cruises, think light clothing, swimwear, and sun protection.

Do I need visas for every country on the cruise itinerary?

Yes. You must have all required visas in place before embarkation — even if you don’t plan to get off the ship in certain ports.

Cruise lines are required to verify that all passengers are eligible to enter every country on the itinerary. If a visa is required for your nationality, you’ll need to obtain it before boarding, regardless of your plans at that stop.

Failure to provide the correct documentation may result in being denied boarding or disembarkation.

We’ll share the full list of scheduled ports for your cruise, but it’s your responsibility to confirm entry requirements based on your citizenship.

Who is responsible for handling visas and entry documents?

Each traveler is fully responsible for securing their own visas and travel documents based on their nationality and the countries on the trip itinerary.

We strongly recommend checking entry requirements early — including passport validity, visa processing times, and any special conditions. Most countries require that your passport be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date.

While we’re happy to point you to helpful resources, we cannot provide legal advice or process visas on your behalf. Always consult official government websites or a trusted visa service for up-to-date information.

What happens if someone gets sick during the cruise?

Cruise ships are well-equipped to handle most medical situations. Every ship has an onboard medical center staffed with licensed doctors and nurses available 24/7 for emergencies or general care. Fees apply for medical visits, so we recommend having travel medical insurance or checking your credit card for coverage.

If someone in your family feels unwell, simply contact the ship’s medical team — they can assess the situation and provide treatment or next steps.

For minor illnesses (colds, seasickness, etc.), onboard staff are usually helpful and discreet. For more serious conditions, the medical team will coordinate care, and if needed, arrangements can be made at the next port.

We always recommend carrying basic medicine with you, such as for sore colds or the flu.

What are the kids’ ages in the group, and how do they spend time together?

Each cruise is different, but our groups typically include a wide range of ages — from toddlers to teens, and even some young adults in their late teens or early 20s.

We always share a kid roster on each cruise page, using simple shorthand like “3g, 5b” (meaning a 3-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy). This gives families a general idea of who’s coming without sharing personal information.

While we can’t guarantee specific age groups on any sailing, we consistently see strong connections form across ages. Younger kids often enjoy the ship’s kids club, while older kids and teens gravitate toward study groups, game nights, pool fun or any other onboard entertainment.
