Education & Family Fit

What does worldschooling mean?

Worldschooling is an educational approach that uses travel, real-world experiences, and global exposure as core components of learning. It's not defined by a specific curriculum or teaching method — it's based on the idea that children (and adults) learn deeply by engaging directly with the world around them. That can look like exploring history through ancient cities and museums, studying science through hikes and wildlife encounters, learning languages through immersion, or building social skills by connecting with people from diverse backgrounds. Some families follow a structured academic plan while traveling; others take a flexible, interest-led approach. Whether you're visiting one new country a year or living on the road full time, if your family is intentionally learning through the world, you're worldschooling.

Can we join a worldschooling cruise as a homeschooling family?

Yes — our cruises are designed with homeschooling and worldschooling families in mind, though they're open to anyone who embraces learning through doing. We don't offer formal classes onboard, but the trips naturally create a rich educational environment: kids form friendships quickly in a safe, self-contained setting, each cruise visits multiple countries without the stress of packing and unpacking between them, and we organize optional private excursions at many ports to deepen the learning. Most families bring their own curriculum or interest-led projects, though many find the cruise itself offers so much that formal academics take a back seat.

What's the difference between a worldschooling cruise and a homeschool cruise?

A worldschooling cruise includes everything you'd find on a traditional homeschool cruise — community, family-friendly experiences, opportunities for learning — but with a broader, globally immersive approach. Homeschool cruises often focus on academics with structured classes onboard. Worldschooling cruises prioritize experiential, place-based learning across multiple countries, with no formal curriculum or required programming. What connects everyone is a shared belief that meaningful education happens both inside and outside the classroom.

Is there an educational component to these trips?

Yes, but not in the traditional classroom sense. Our trips are built around experiential learning — education happens through exploration, cultural immersion, and hands-on discovery rather than formal lessons. That means visiting historic sites and museums, exploring natural environments, interacting with local guides and communities, and building independence through travel. Many families also bring their own academic materials or follow interest-led learning along the way.

Is anyone doing math, language arts, or formal schoolwork?

It depends on the family. Some bring along light academics like math workbooks or writing projects; others take a complete break from formal schoolwork and focus on experiential learning during the trip. There's no required curriculum or academic structure — though it's common for kids to form study groups on their own, especially once they discover shared interests.

How Trips Are Organized

How are the group cruises organized?

All of our group cruises are organized by Worldschooling Journeys, a division of Every Avenue Travel. We work with trusted cruise lines and build a framework for community, connection, and learning tailored to homeschooling and worldschooling families. Our cruises aren't guided or led trips — Elena Ollick, founder of Every Avenue Travel, may join some sailings but doesn't attend all of them, and no trip depends on a single leader. Our team supports each trip from start to finish, with 24/7 access and direct contact with the cruise line and local excursion providers. We provide:

  • A detailed pre-trip guide, including packing tips, ship deck plans, port info, and group dynamics guidance
  • Optional pre-cruise hotel booking and help finding the best flights
  • Organized pre-cruise meetups, a welcome meeting onboard, and, when possible, a ship staff introduction
  • Private port excursions researched and vetted specifically for our worldschooling community
How are land trips organized?

Land-based trips are organized directly by our team or in collaboration with local tour operators who know the region well. They're more structured than cruises and always include experienced guides or group leaders familiar with the local culture, language, and logistics. We prioritize small, locally-owned businesses and design itineraries that are respectful, family-centered, and rooted in meaningful connection with the destination and its people.

Will there be group leaders or hosts on the cruise?

Our cruises are community-led, not guided tours — cruise ships already come fully staffed with professional crew, kids' clubs, entertainment, and excursions, so there's no need for a paid trip leader onboard. Keeping it that way lets us hold prices at the original cruise line rate. Instead, our 9-person team coordinates the pieces around the cruise: pre-cruise hotel options, flight tips, group chats, meetups, group dinners, and private port excursions. You decide how much time to spend with the group versus exploring independently. If you'd prefer daily guidance and a dedicated on-trip leader, one of our land-based trips may be a better fit.

What group activities will be organized on cruises?

We keep scheduled group activities simple and optional, so families can enjoy both connection and freedom during the cruise.

Every sailing includes:

  • A welcome meet-and-greet on embarkation day
  • A group dinner on the first night to help everyone get acquainted
  • Linked dining reservations so families can all dine together nightly, though some may choose to dine based on their own schedule
  • Access to a group chat for coordinating meetups, excursions, or spontaneous gatherings throughout the trip
  • Optional, but highly recommended: port excursions, specifically tailored to our worldschooled group

Beyond that, the cruise ship itself offers a full schedule of entertainment, kids’ clubs, and activities — which families are free to enjoy together or separately. In our experience, children make friends quickly, and adults naturally form smaller connection groups based on shared interests and energy levels.

We also try to arrange special enrichment opportunities, such as a behind-the-scenes talk with the ship’s engineer or staff, though these are subject to cruise line approval.

Dining is flexible: we link all cabins under the group reservation so it’s easy to sit together or make your own plans.

Each family can engage as much or as little as they choose — our structure creates space for connection without adding pressure or over-scheduling.

I'm not sure I can handle that many days at sea. What should I expect?

Many families find sea days are some of the best parts of the trip. Unlike port days, which involve off-ship exploration and can be tiring, sea days move at a slower pace — full use of the ship's pools, shows, and kids' clubs, informal meetups with other families, and time to rest and reconnect. Sailings with multiple sea days often leave families feeling more connected, with time to build relationships without the rush of constant excursions.

Are there group excursions for the Worldschooling group?

Yes — we organize private group excursions in nearly every port, unless the group specifically opts out, which is rare. They're educational and hands-on, family-friendly and age-appropriate, culturally immersive with local guides, and typically more affordable than the cruise line's own excursions thanks to negotiated group rates. A dedicated team member's full-time role is planning and coordinating these. They're optional and priced separately from your cruise fare, paid directly to Every Avenue Travel, with details shared in your cruise's private WhatsApp group.

How do you choose and price the excursions for each cruise?

We hand-select each excursion for what's culturally significant about the destination, how well it suits mixed-age families, and a commitment to partnering with local operators so your money supports the local economy. Pricing depends on the activity, regional cost of services, and group size:

  • $50–$90 for shorter cultural or walking tours
  • $90–$120 for half-day, hands-on or adventure-based excursions
  • $120–$190 for full-day or premium experiences unique to the region

Regional cost of living plays a role too — a guided tour in Norway will run higher than a similar one in Southeast Asia. Full details, including pricing and age recommendations, are shared in your cruise's WhatsApp group in advance, and participation is always optional.

Booking & Pricing

Do you offer more cruises than the ones on the homepage?

Yes — the homepage only shows a small selection. We offer over 40 different worldschooling and family-friendly cruises, and you can view all current options, including pricing, dates, and itineraries, on our Trips page. We can also help research and book an individual family cruise outside of a group sailing if you're looking for something more private.

Do you book individual cruises and tours for just one family?

Yes. We're happy to arrange private travel — cruises, luxury hotels and resorts, or multi-day guided tours — for a single family. Booking through us supports a small, family-run business rather than a large corporation, at no extra cost to you: pricing matches the standard market rate, and we're paid on commission directly by the hotel, cruise line, or tour operator. Just send us your destination, dates, interests, and any special requests, and we'll curate options tailored to your family.

I'm ready to book, what are the next steps?

Every cruise and land trip has its own page with full pricing details and a booking inquiry form. Submit the form to start — we'll follow up with current pricing and cabin options and answer any questions. When you're ready, we'll send a secure encrypted link for your card details (or take them by phone), and book directly through the cruise line's back-end system via our agency, Fora Travel, so your price always matches the official cruise line site, sometimes with added perks. Once booked, you'll get a confirmation and access to your group's private excursions and community updates. You can reach us anytime via WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or email.

Do you charge extra to organize these cruises?

No. We're licensed travel agents booking directly through the cruise lines, so your cabin price matches booking direct — plus you get our worldschooling community, coordinated excursions and meetups, and personalized support before and during the trip. We're compensated by the cruise lines via commission, not by you.

Can I join you on a cruise if I book on my own?

No — to be part of the official group, your booking needs to go through us. Families who book independently are welcome on the same ship, but won't be included in group activities, private excursions, or our communication channels. We don't charge extra for organizing the group; we're compensated by the cruise line when you book with us, and being in the group gets you the WhatsApp community, onboard meetups, and full support from our team.

Payments & Safety

Are there payment plans?

Yes, for all cruise bookings. You can split payments however works for you, as long as the balance is paid by the final due date — typically 90 days before departure, though this can vary by cruise line. If you don't request a custom plan, we'll charge the initial deposit to lock in your rate and cabin, and the cruise line will automatically charge the remaining balance on the final due date, which we'll always communicate clearly beforehand.

How does payment work, and how do I know it's safe?

For cruises, bookings go through Fora Travel, a licensed agency (IATA 33520476); our team operates under strict internal protocols and NDAs to protect your information. We'll confirm total cost, deposit, and final due date before anything is charged, then send a secure, PCI-compliant encrypted link to store your card details — we always confirm with you before the deposit is charged. The remaining balance is automatically charged on the final due date, and payments go directly to the cruise line, with confirmation emails coming from them, not us. For land trips, payment is processed through WeTravel, a secure third-party platform, via a private link you complete yourself. We recommend paying by credit card for the built-in travel protection many cards offer.

Should I add cruise travel insurance?

We recommend it, though whether you need a separate policy depends on your situation — start by checking what your credit card already covers for trip cancellation, interruption, and medical care. If that's not enough, our recommended provider is SafetyWing Nomad Insurance: the Essentials Plan for U.S. citizens, the Complete Plan for non-U.S. citizens or long-term travelers. Available as a one-time policy or ongoing subscription.

Health, Safety & Documents

Will I get sea sick?

Most travelers, even those prone to motion sickness, don't have issues. Modern ships are large and stabilized, and crews monitor weather and adjust course to avoid rough seas. On a typical two-week sailing you might feel one or two mildly rocky days at most. We still recommend packing seasickness medication or patches just in case, though they're rarely needed.

Are cruise meals safe for allergies and special diets (like celiac or vegan)?

Yes — major cruise lines can accommodate celiac/gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, and other dietary needs as long as they know in advance. When you book with us, we pass your requirements to the cruise line, and your dining staff will take extra care once you're onboard. For serious allergies, we recommend confirming again with the head waiter at your first meal.

What should we pack for a cruise?

There's no luggage limit on cruises beyond airline rules, so pack comfortably — many families bring an extra suitcase just for snacks, coffee, or oat milk and come home with it empty. You'll get a packing guide tailored to your specific itinerary and season: layers and waterproof gear for colder ports, light clothing and sun protection for tropical ones. Alcohol policies vary by cruise line; we'll cover the specifics in your prep guide.

Do I need visas for every country on the cruise itinerary?

Yes — you need all required visas in place before boarding, even for ports you don't plan to leave the ship at. Cruise lines verify every passenger is eligible to enter every country on the itinerary, and missing documentation can mean being denied boarding or disembarkation. We'll share your cruise's full port list, but confirming entry requirements for your nationality is your responsibility.

Who is responsible for handling visas and entry documents?

Each traveler is responsible for their own visas and travel documents. We recommend checking entry requirements early, including passport validity (most countries require at least 6 months beyond your return date) and visa processing times. We can point you to helpful resources, but we can't provide legal advice or process visas on your behalf — always confirm with official government sources or a trusted visa service.

What happens if someone gets sick during the cruise?

Every ship has an onboard medical center staffed 24/7 by licensed doctors and nurses (fees apply, so travel medical insurance or credit card coverage is worth checking). For minor illnesses, onboard staff are helpful and discreet; for anything more serious, the medical team coordinates care and can arrange support at the next port if needed. We recommend carrying basic over-the-counter medicine with you as well.

Community & Fit

Do you facilitate group communication?

Yes. For cruises: a WhatsApp group active well before departure, an optional bio doc for families to share interests and travel styles, a pre-cruise meetup, an onboard welcome meeting, linked dining so the group sits together, and on most lines a shipboard messaging app organized by stateroom. For land trips, everyone joins a dedicated WhatsApp group ahead of time to plan and connect before meeting in person. You can engage as much or as little as you like.

How do I know if we get along with the other families?

Every group is different, but most families find their people quickly — the key is participation. We've had introverts who preferred quieter moments, extroverts who thrived on group outings, and kids of all personalities forming fast friendships across ages. You don't need to fit a certain mold, just show up as yourself. The goal isn't to force connection, it's to create space for it to happen naturally.

What are the kids' ages in the group, and how do they spend time together?

It varies by cruise, but groups typically span toddlers to teens, sometimes into the early 20s. We share a kid roster on each cruise page using simple shorthand (like "3g, 5b" for a 3-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy) so families get a general sense of who's coming. We can't guarantee specific age groups on any sailing, but we consistently see strong connections form across ages — younger kids gravitate to the kids' club, older kids and teens to study groups, game nights, and pool time.

Can you tell me more about your mission and vision?

At Worldschooling Journeys, our mission is to create meaningful, connection-based travel experiences for homeschooling and worldschooling families who want more than just a vacation.

We believe that learning happens best through real-world experiences, especially when shared with a like-minded community. Our vision is to build a mobile village — one where families can explore the world together, support one another, and give their children the freedom to grow in environments that are rich with culture, diversity, and natural curiosity.

Whether it’s a multi-country cruise, a seasonal farm stay, RV caravanning, sailing, skiing, or slow travel — we aim to design journeys that reflect the full spectrum of what families want to experience together. We focus on:

  • Ease and flexibility — no packing and unpacking, no rigid structure
  • Deep community — families who travel and learn side by side
  • Real-world education — through place, people, and presence

We’re building more than trips — we’re building a lifestyle of freedom, connection, and learning that families can return to again and again.
